MEET THE MUSICIANS: CHARLOTTE LUBBOCK, VOCALS

We recently called on the vocal talents of professional singer Charlotte Lubbock to help us introduce you to our new Vocals 2018 syllabus. Here Charlotte, who graduated from The BRIT School with the likes of Adele and Katy B and is now a professional session singer and pianist, talks to us about why she became a singer, and the skills she thinks you need to make it in the industry.

In your career to date, who have you played with and where have you played?

As a session singer, I work in the studio a lot with songwriters and producers submitting songs to labels for signing. As a lead singer of the band Symphony Cult, I’ve played heaps of cool venues and festivals around UK & Europe, including The Roundhouse, Queen Elizabeth Hall & Download Festival.

What have been your career highlights as a vocalist?

Download Festival was certainly a highlight and a massive goal achievement for me! Living in Germany whilst I recorded an album with my band was also an amazing experience.

What do you love most about what you do?

Being on stage is home to me and I love performing songs that mean something. Music is an amazing form of communication and unifying people and it’s a beautiful thing to be a part of making that happen.

What inspired you to start singing?

I come from a family of musicians and I was inspired by all the music around me.

How did you go about learning to sing?

I taught myself initially, learnt classical singing from age 12, and then had a pop/soul singing teacher from when I was 16.

What advice would you give someone starting out in the industry?

Be prepared to work incredibly hard, take every opportunity and don’t give up. It’s so easy in such a tough industry to get affected by the knocks and competition but you have to know what you want, stay focused and see beyond that.

What do you think is the #1 skill needed by professional vocalists?

Confidence. You need confidence to get the gigs, confidence to do the gigs and confidence to sing your best. Hesitation is the worst thing when learning to sing, which naturally we all do sometimes but it can really affect your performance. Even those that aren’t the best singers can get away with it if they perform with conviction!

Who are your musical heroes and what would your dream collaboration be?

I love so many… From Bon Jovi to Stevie Wonder and Beth Hart to Alicia Keys… I would love to work with any of these artists!

What are you currently working on?

I’ve just launched a new band, Midnight Martinis, available for all types of events and I’m due to release my solo material for the first time later this year… Keep checking back to my website, charlottelubbock.com, for release dates.
